Day 16 – From Olympic National Park to Raymond, WA

The bulk of today was a long hike through Hoh Rain Forest, in Olympic National Park.

I woke up, thankful once again for having survived another roadside night unmolested (both figuaratively and literally) and made my way back about 15 miles to the town of Port Angeles, where they hide the Visitor’s Center. After getting the lowdown on the hiking trails, I was off.

Well, first I checked out the local Goodwill. The Goodwill in Port Angeles is awesome. First off, it’s freakin’ huge. Not Super Wal-Mart, from-sea-to-shining-sea huge, but pretty large. It was also very professionally put together; there was a full bank of registers, and the products had actual price tags (as apposed to hand written stickers) with UPCs and everything, like it’s a real store or something. I went in there looking for a rain jacket. Naturally, I ended up with a rain jacket and three more books I don’t have time to read:

This is why I love Goodwill. At a normal store, $20 might get you a rain jacket. At Goodwill, less than $20 gets you a rain jacket, and three parcels of snobbery.

A few days ago, I was wandering about and saw this sign:

You bet yo ucan't finish it?  I bet you're right, but that's no reason not to give it a sporting try.

I was intrigued, but on my way to do other things, and so let it pass. The next day, I decided that if there’s a restaurant willing to sell me two pounds of beef and happiness, I was obligated to take them up on the offer. After all, why am I here? To wander around idle and complacent, or to risk gastric rupture?
