Day 34 – From Kings Canyon to Yosemite

November 5, 2008

It’s amazing what 24 hours and a few hundred miles can do to improve the weather. I literally couldn’t have asked for better weather today. It was brite and sunny out the entire day, but were still a few clouds wandering around to keep the photos looking better. Not only that, but the temperature was perfect for hiking; brisk, but not cold. I was more than a little shutter happy today, so I have a veritable hoard of photos to post:

So I guess pogo sticks are ok? And hover boards of course. But definately not Light Cycles.

They sure don't make 'em this big back home.

I made a concerted effort to reframe from making a “That’s what she said” crack concerning the above caption, but have apparently failed.

So many rocks, and not a trebuchet in sight:

I am not a wildlife photographer. This much I confirmed today when I came across several animals rife for the photographing. Most of my shots ended up along these lines:

Most of the others ended up either out of focus or otherwise not appealing. Regardless, here’s a few of them:

This probably could have killed me. It didnt. Either that, or I'm a zombie.

This would be the money shot. Which is ironic, considering that the pine cone shot above, which actually has money in it, is not the money shot.

I got back to my car just as the light was fading. Afterwards, I got back on 99 (the North/South expressway) to 140 East, which has taken me to the doorstep of Yosemite. I’m actually feeling a bit conspiqious, as I’m parked across from what looks to be a pretty ritzy hotel and lodge. We’ve kind of got two entirely different styles of travel across the road from each other. Mine is a bit cheaper, but their’s definately smells better.

140 bisects Yosemite, so my plan is to spend tomorrow on the West end of the park, head to the East the day after, and then make for Death Valley.

Sidenote: I find the phrase “Make for Death Valley” more than a bit amusing. What the Hell kind of world do we live in that anyone anywhere makes for a place called “Death Valley?”
