Well, this is an end.

November 16, 2008

I’ve been back in BG for about a day and a half now. I’m still getting used to not having a travel itinerary laid out. When I woke up this morning, I actually spent a few moments looking for the atlas before I remembered I didn’t need one to get out of bed.

It’s been a long trip, and is somewhat difficult to sum up. First, some stats:

Days: 46
States: 20
Provinces: 1
Miles: 10,420

Day 46: From Crawfordsville, IN to Bowling Green, OH

November 16, 2008

Well, here I am again. The last drive of the trip was thoroughly uneventful, interrupted only by a self imposed layover in Brownsburg to post the last batch of blog updates.

When I woke up in Indiana, it was cold and spitting rain, giving me a firm reminder of what I had waiting for me in Northwest Ohio in November:

Umvelinqangi decided to thumb his nose at me one last time before the trip was over.

I’m now back in Ohio, ready to try and figure out what I’m going to do with myself next. As for this blog, I’m hoping to get a sort of capstone post ready to go in the next day or two. It’ll take a bit of mental digestion before I can sum anything up. As for right now, I’m going to bed.

A Post for Posterity – The Mighty Kia

November 14, 2008

I’m using the WiFi at the Brownsburg Public Library (Up yours, Starbucks) outside of Indianapolis on what should be the last day of the trip.

I felt a need to document my living arrangements over the last month and a half before the trip comes to close. I stayed in a hotel one night, spent two collective weeks in hostels, and several people were kind enough to offer up their couches, but by and large, I’ve lived in and out of my car, aka The Mighty Kia, for the last six weeks.

Day 45: From Oklahoma City to Crawfordsville, Indiana

November 14, 2008

I covered a lot of miles today, and not much else, save the notable exception of stopping by my friend Neal’s place near the University of Illinois and catching up for a while. After some tasty Thai food and conversation, I got back on the road due East and drove until safety concerns had me looking for a truck stop. That has brought me to Crawfordsville, about 30 miles into Indiana.

During my ten hours of interstate driving, I took only a couple photos. First, I did drive through St. Louis, so here’s the obligatory St. Louis Arch Photo:

Later, this indelible nugget of Americana caught my eye while getting gas in Illinois:

I think the people from Vernal have been through here.

And that’s it for Day 45. Lots of miles, not much to report.

Day 44: From Amarillo to Oklahoma City

November 14, 2008

I accomplished both of my goals in Texas and have now finished th first leg of a long drive through flyover country.

My day started though along Route 87 in Northern Texas. I got into Amarillo a little after nine and after a bit of searching, found the Cadillac Ranch:

Day 43: From Denver to Dalhart, Texas

November 13, 2008

I wandered a bit in Denver today. I woke up rather late and spent an inordinate amount of time updating the blog, so I found myself with not much time to do much else. From what little I did see, the city seems to be a pretty nice place. There’s a lot of eccentric architecture, a very swanky convention center, and other signs that there’s a lot of money floating around, which would bode well for job markets and the like.

Day 42: From Heber, UT to Denver, CO

November 11, 2008

Today was a long drive along Route 40, a quick side trip to Rocky Mountain National Park, and the arrival into the outskirts of Denver.

Some photos from the road:

Wow. And I thought Bong Recreation Area was akwardly named.
