Day 1 – Starting Point

September 30, 2008

Well, I’m just a few minutes from heading out the door. There’s not really much to say in this post except something puerile like “here I go”, so I’ll just keep this one short. I’m starting out in my neck of the woods and heading for my first stop in Milwaukee, where a friend of mine is graciously lending me the use of a couch, thus lessening the number of days I’m sleeping in my car. After that, it’s straight to Vancouver, with a few diversions anticipated along the way.

Of course, this is all assuming my 9 year old, 100K+ miles Kia Sportage (below) is actually up to this nonsense….

My Ride

She'll hold together. Maybe.

erm… Ye ha?

Well, this is a start.

So I’m this guy and I’m going on this trip.

A while back, around March of this year (or maybe October of last year), an idea started germinating in my head about going on a wee trip to take a look at some cities that look appealing as places to live, if and when I ever get out of my neck of the woods. At this point, my top candidates include Vancourver, San Fransisco, LA (shudder), and Denver…. The problem with these places was that they’re all fairly far from each other and damn bloody far away from me, making this nascent excursion logistacally dificult.

At the time, I didn’t have the money or the time for something like that, and I actually had a job that I gave a damn about, so I shelved the idea. Fast foward seven months to the present, and I’ve been laid of from that job, I have the money for the trip (more or less), and I have the time.

I’m not sure why I’m blogging about this, being that I’ve never felt any desire to blog about anything else – that, and I find the very word “blog” to be highly steeped in yuppie self indulgence – but yet here I am.

I had already intended to keep a journal about the trip (something I didn’t do on previous trips, which I somewhat regret), so maybe this is just the natural millennial/21st century/all-signing-all-dancing progression of the personal journal I had intended.

Anyway, whatever. I’ll stop obsessing about the “why” for the time being and get on with the “do.”

‘More to follow.
